“What is That Stuff? Fluoride?”

Most people approve of the Fluoridation of our water, but what about the people who don’t? Some say that putting Fluoride in drinking water is unessesary. It is already in our toothpaste, and some food and beverages so why should we spend money to add it to our water too? They say it will be ineffective. Others beleive that the levels of fluoride being added to water will be harmful and dangerous. Water suppliers oppose it becasue of the cost burden, and think this issue should be set aside for the local communities, not the states.

I would say we should add it to drinking water, because it is proven that it reduces toothe decay. So many people are for the fluoridation of water and for good reasons too. Community water fluoridation is safe and effective in preventing tooth decay, and has been identified by CDC as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

The toothpaste companies had to find a fluoride-abrasive combination that worked. The first company to do this was Proctor and Gamble. They paired stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. They dominated the toothpaste company for the next ten years then Colgate came out with a fluoride toothpaste and made it the market standard. These two additions made it possible for toothpaste companies to push to obtain their own advances. This then made it widely used in the toothpaste bussiness. Then Sodium fluoride was invented. This fluoride is now widely used in the market today.

When I researched this topic I found that there are many cancer scares concerning the fluoridation of water. This scares me because there have many different tests regarding the increase of cancer and the different side effects involving this disease. It scares me to think that people have concerdered this as a side effect and some even beleive it is. The death rate in cancer had increased in the areas that had fluoridated water while the areas without it stayed constant. This experiment wouldn’t be very controlled, because no person can have the exact same DNA and it would be hard to distinguish fluoridation side effects from a person’s health characteristics. Although, a significant increase in cancer deaths would scare me becasue you wouldn’t be able to explain thousands of health issues. it would have to be a change in the water. This side effect is significant to me.
